In No More Salespeople Consulting, Unified Communications (UC)

In early February, the business wires carried this alert:

LogMeIn Inc. (Nasdaq:LOGM) today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Jive Communications for $342 million in cash …

Wait — don’t leave. We haven’t renamed No More Salespeople to Nightly Business Report. But here’s why that announcement is a big deal. You might know LogMeIn better by some of their product titles: GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, join.me and OpenVoice.

Jive’s products don’t have clever names. They’re called things like Voice, Video, Mobile, Web. And with 20,000 users worldwide, Jive is hardly a giant. (LogMeIn has 25 million users every month.) So what makes Jive worth $300M to LogMeIn?

"As technology advances so has the mobile and remote workforce. Unified communications is playing an increased role in making the transition from the traditional work environment to the home office seamlessly. To do this, communication providers must adapt to the ever changing business necessities, or be left behind."

Alex De Michieli Star2Star Communications, LLC

Jive grew from a $31 million company to more than 10 times that in 12 years because its primary product is unified communications. UC uses the internet to let all of your communications … well, communicate. UC is how communication and software as a service come together. PC Mag defines UC as “the real-time redirection of a voice, text or email message to the device closest to the intended recipient at any given time.”

If your business is relying on the same phone system you’ve owned for years, here’s what unified communications could mean for you:

Your system could be automatically transcribing your voicemails into emails so you could read them when you can’t listen to them.

“Find Me Follow Me” means a call to your desk phone when you’re not at your desk will ring your cell phone, or another phone you select.

And when you are at your desk, you could have a “softphone” on your computer for making calls or sending instant messages, all from your contacts list, while you’re looking at your team members’ availability on your monitor.

You would have access to easy, instant reports to help you manage wait times, call times and call sorting for various ad campaigns.

All of your communications can come together, then easily integrate with other platforms such as LogMeIn, Office 365, Salesforce, ConnectWise, Zendesk, NetSuite, SugarCRM and literally, on and on.

Think of it this way: Remember when mobile phones came along? The first ones were so big and heavy they were called “bricks.” Eventually, we got smartphones, putting everything we need right in the palm of our hands, and now we don’t know how we ever got along without them. So if you’re still using your old voice technology or managing your own phone system with a PRI or SIP service …

… you’re holding a brick.
